Basic Franchising For Beginners
Buying a franchise can be an excellent way to go into business while having the security of a tried and true business plan for success. It can take much of the trial and error out of the equation that independent business owners often go through, because you can instead work from a template of an already proven business model and focus your time on perfecting your operation. When deciding whether a franchise business is right for you, it’s important to know the basics such as how they function and what you can expect from your franchisor-franchisee relationship before you jump in any further. Here is some basic franchise business information to help you get started:
What is a Franchise?
“An agreement between the franchisor and franchisee, wherein the individual buying into a franchise will market a product or service created and provided by the franchisor”, is the basic definition of what a franchise is. Another way to look at it is that you get to be your own boss, own a business but also be able to be part of an established organization and system. Franchising maintains a certain amount of security to those who want to work for themselves and also offers a bit of support to those to achieve success. Even though franchising offers all of this there is no magic formula. Franchisees still have to work hard, have some sort of entrepreneurial skills and be dedicated in order to ensure their business will operate to the best of its ability.
The Financial Exchange:
Many times, the franchisee must pay certain fees and royalties back to the parent company simply for the privilege of working within the franchisor’s system. There can also be many variations from one organization to another, so be sure you do your homework before you get into a franchise agreement. This is where a having an experienced franchise lawyer to help you negotiate these contracts will be extremely beneficial. Compensating for these fees and royalties, the franchisor will provide an initial framework to get the franchisee started, support during this process and marketing while the business is running. Of course the amount of support you get will be specific from one franchise to the next, so again research will be needed and a franchise evaluation is recommended. Franchise lawyers should be able to help you create a comprehensive franchise evaluation report before you make your decision.
Two Main Types Of franchise:
In the process of deciding to buy into a franchise you will have to decide if you want to get into a business franchise or a product/trade name distribution franchise. A business franchise format you would receive everything you need to start up your own business. This would include logos, trademarks, marketing, a well developed business plan and continual support from the franchisor. Of course these would not all be free. A business franchise format provides all of these things to a franchisee for an upfront fee and ongoing royalties. Product/trade name franchising can be much simpler. The franchisors provide a product, advertising and branding. This makes it possible for a franchisee to sell these goods at a chosen location. An example of this type of franchising would be for soft drinks and office supplies.
