What is PLR and What Can it Do for Your Business?

If you’ve been in the internet marketing business for more than a couple of months, you’ve run across something called PLR. You may not be sure what this is or even what it stands for. As it happens, PLR stands for Private Label Right (not to be confused with the UK’s Public Lending Right, which is very different). What does PLR mean and what are the differences between this and other license agreements like Master Resell Rights (MRR) – and for your purposes, does the distinction matter?

The term PLR refers to the licensing rights attached to information products such as a basic set of articles or a more complex content package containing eBooks or audio recordings. This license gives purchasers of the content the right to use it in whatever way they wish.

This is content which was created by someone else. Rather than marketing and selling this material themselves, they license their work to a company or an individual to sell in their stead.

You can find PLR materials for sale on many websites, some of which require a membership to use their content, others which are available for anyone to browse. Many of the membership sites don’t allow you to choose what content they provide you, so you’ll want to be certain that they offer a lot of material which you can use before you commit to these sites. The unrestricted PLR sites allow you to pick the content you want to purchase, which is often the better deal for people who work in niche marketing.

PLR content comes with a license that provides specific directions about how you can and can’t use the package. The most useful PLR content comes with an unconditional license which allows you to rewrite, repackage and use the information as you wish. An unconditional license allows you to put your own name on the content, remove or add to content, and even sell it to other people at whatever price you choose. It is like you are the actual author without having to do the hard work of writing.

Even PLR material with an otherwise unconditional license may stipulate that you can’t resell this material. Be sure to read and make sure you understand the terms of the licensing. If they don’t allow you to use the material in the way you need, then pass it by; there’s plenty of other PLR content to be had out there.

You’ll also want to take a look at the material before you buy. See if you can view a sample so you have an idea of what you’re getting. There is PLR content which is comparable in quality to what you’d pay a small fortune for from an ad agency or a marketing consultancy and PLR content which is completely without value. With written material, Google a sentence or two in quotes so you can see how many others are already using this content. If everyone and their mother is using the same content, you’ll probably want to pass.

PLR content with an unconditional use license can be a valuable resource. The money you’ll spend to purchase this material pales in comparison to the amount of time you’d have to spend to do it yourself and in most cases is also lower than that of hiring professionals to produce it to order. You can get high quality PLR content for anywhere from $50-$200, which is an outstanding bargain compared to the alternatives.
