A funeral director’s primary job is to make preparations for the cremation or burial of the deceased and for the particular rituals that precede the burial.

There are four important tasks of a funeral director, they are: (a) shifting of the body to the mortuary; (b) anointing and readying the body for service; (c) arranging for the ceremonies for friends and family to pay their last respects to the deceased and; (d) the final act of cremation or burial as per the beliefs of the family.

These duties cover a wide variety of jobs, which include arrangement of hearse for carrying the body, deliberation on the place and timings for memorial service and also publishing obituaries in the electronic media and in the newspapers. In addition, the funeral directors also have to ensure that the decorations and flowers are in place. Besides this, they have to prepare the body for the ceremony by bathing and embalming it and arrange conveyance for the family and friends gathering for the service.

Apart from these tasks, a funeral director has to take care of the task of doing the mandatory paperwork formalities needed after a person’s death. He helps the relatives in obtaining a death certificate. He is also entrusted with other tasks like helping the family members with obtaining the insurance money and to take benefit of seniors’ burial scheme. He can also arrange for the transfer of any annuities or pensions that the family members are entitled to receive, and provides tips to the family on how to manage funeral costs.

He also has to associate with a wide range of professionals to perform his jobs in a proper and systematic way. He has to interact with not just the casket makers and flower sellers but also physicians and the clergy.

Finally, it is essential for funeral directors to give some extra time and provide comfort and solace to the bereaved family of the departed, in order to help them tide over their grief. Though it is a crucial aspect of the profession, some funeral directors usually consider it a peripheral responsibility.
