The first step is preparing the images. When offset printing began, the images had to be developed by the use of film negatives and they were later put on aluminum plates. This is no longer required as the technology is available for making the plates in one step through an image setting system. The subsequent step is to attach the plate on to a cylinder such that it is spot on. Then the water and ink are spread on the image plates, in that order. The ink is poured over the image and to restrict it from overflowing, a thin layer of water is put over the remaining part of the plate.

The image is then taken from the plates to the rubber blanket spun on another cylinder, so that it is reversed. The image is inverted to its correct side by transmitting the image to sheets which have been cut in line with the requirement and are put on a different cylinder.

Last steps of the printing job involve things such as stapling, gluing or arranging the printed sheets in line with the instructions of the client, and any printing company should easily manage these.
