Created in Keswick, England during 1564, the pencil was an implement used for writing and drawing and engineered from graphite and carbon. As the pencil developed, so did the pen, a piece of stationary used widely across the world and imperative to most individuals every day life. [link].
In 1795, Nicolas Conte who was a French chemist, brought the pencil to new heights encapsulating a further mix of clay and graphite and placing this into a wooden case once heated over a high heat. To cope with the high demand for pencils due to their growing popularity, Eberhard Faber erected a pencil factory in 1861 located in New York which coped with the influx of sales.
Back in 500 BC, it is believed that the ancient Indians created a pen using bird feathers and bamboo sticks. Quite a nifty device for those times. In Egypt around a similar time, they were busy scrawling away on papyrus with reed pens from natural products such as sea rush.
As the years passed by, the pen advanced and by 1907, the first solid ink fountain pen was introduced. Slavojub Eduard Penkala and budding entrepreneur Edmund Moster, got their heads together and formed Penkala-Moster, a pencil factory which was the biggest company of this industry in it’s time. Still in business today, the company is known as TOZ-Penkala.
All children today will reach for their felt tipped pens and colouring books and enjoy making their pictures come to life. Thanks to Yukio Horie back in the 1960′s, this is now possible. With many kinds of pens becoming increasingly sought after, the rollerball came into play during the 1980′s providing a further option for writing.
Pens today are great as gifts and can be found in all different manors. Some novelty, some more sophisticated with names engraved into them. Children love bright coloured pens with quirky extras and different colours which also make fun presents for adults.
Pens are integral in the workplace. Each day, many workers will attend conferences, or visit potential clients. It is at this point, a promotional gift will aid getting out your brand and ensuring customers have some part of your company to take away with them. Offering them a pen with a company logo will provide people with a permanent reminder.
Pencils are also another great way for promotion and make a fantastic alternative to pens. With so many styles available there is something to suit everyone. You could choose a standard pencil or an older style wooden type, taking users back to their school days.
