Carbon offset credits are reductions in emissions of greenhouse gases that are made to compensate for emissions that are made elsewhere. They are usually measured in tons of carbon dioxide equivalents.

This idea makes use of economically favorable incentives in the fight against pollution. A managerial establishment puts caps on the total amount of carbon dioxide equivalents that a company is allowed to emit. This can be traded for an equivalent permit to emit these gases by another entity. In this way, every company is able to buy permits that correspond to the amount of gases it emits.

This scheme allows entities to trade these credits in 2 different ways. Individual governments may buy them to stay in accordance with their maximum emission restriction. On the other hand, smaller entities may buy these credits to restrict their own emissions that are generated from their heating, energy production and transport activities.

These designs also work hand in hand with research specialists by funding their research which is geared towards the exploration of renewable energy. The most popular energy resource among such schemes is wind. They also advocate for energy consciousness by the citizenry and encourage conservation.

As concern shifts more to environmental conservation, these credits are becoming more popular especially in the West. People are now shifting trends to adopt more efficient lifestyles. Some environmental conservation forums are now sanctioning the use of these offsets. Organizations and governments now earn credits which they then trade in carbon markets.

Questions have been raised as to the ability of these schemes to make any viable progress in environmental conservation. Some entities regard them as a method of supplementing their income. In addition, some countries give these credits to native companies for free. This creates an uneven play ground because companies from other countries still have to buy them.
