Our planet could gain from a little aid from us so that it could cradle our future generations. The days when we were insensitive to the impact of pollution on bodies of water, agricultural lands, and the air are done for. Now that we are feeling the effects of global warming, we become receptive to what is occuring around us.

The earth could use a little commitment from us to nourish our offspring. Gone are the occasions of being insensitive to the outcome of greenhouse gases on our oceans and rivers, on agricultural lands, and to the air. As we begin to sense the uncomfortable results of global climate change, enlightenment that our decisions also have deep influence on biodiversity is also rapidly awakening.

Creating change in a complex world is not a simple affair. So many stakeholders have their finger in the pie and so many expectations and interests are at stake. Carbon dioxide credits do offer a smart, logical and very feasible solution to our carbon CO2 problems facing us.

Like it or not, our predecessors over the last 100 years have tipped the environmental scale to the point where we must take a massive focus on our polluting or suffer the results which will be severe. There is no argument now about the Greenhouse effect and its likely outcome unless we take action. Carbon credits will not resolve the issue, but give us a ‘currency’ and a methodology of which to manage it and start taking a new direction in the way we use fossil fuels.

Authorities all over the world have now sought for means of limiting pollution in their own countries. With an incentive program from the authorities, which is commonly known as emissions trading, business conglomerates have participated in the move to set a limit on greenhouse gas emissions.

In Australia, more and more companies are planting trees and providing carbon credits via Carbon Sequestration Programmes. Many of the progarmmes are special initiatives that concentrat on supporting enduring plantings of an endemic kind of eucalyptus (the mallee eucalyptus) to provide a cost-effective and affordable way for companies to reduce their carbon emission risk under an Australian Government’s program that wishes to lower carbon emissions in the country.

The carbon companies interacts with the government in a number of initiatives that focus on decreasing the environmental impact of companies being put up in the country. As such, it was instrumental in the proclamation of the Australian Government regarding the tax incentives awarded to corporations that have projects sponsoring forest carbon sinks.

Perhaps, it would be some time still before the pollution levels in the planet will be reduced, as what the carbon companies aim. It’s not an instant task. Still, there is something great to look forward to: Nature will be given another chance to flourish. In time, the mallee eucalyptus’s root will dig deep into the ground, holding on to the planet’s future.

The dangerous levels of harmful greenhouse gases such as CO2 in the atmosphere has resulted in global concern over the increasingly devastating impact they have on the environment. Instruments like carbon credits and carbon offset were devised in order to improve the scenario by incentivizing firms which are more eco friendly in the way they run their operations.

The use of carbon credits is a recent phenomenon. One carbon credit provides the authorisation for release of one tonne of carbon dioxide or an equivalent amount of some other greenhouse gas into the atmosphere. The maximum amount of emissions in the world can be controlled through the carbon trading system in which carbon credits can be sold and purchased.

Carbon credits are distributed among companies to limit the amount of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide that they emit. A company engages in carbon trading when its discharge is over and above the levels prescribed by its carbon credits quota, so as to buy credits from those enterprises that have used more eco-friendly techniques and have extra carbon credits.

As a result, the global carbon emissions stay below prescribed levels, and the companies come up with eco friendly ways of conducting business so that their emissions are lesser and they are spared of making additional expenditure on carbon credits. This system is beneficial for organizations making use of ecologically sustainable methods to keep striving in this regard as they can make more earnings from carbon credits business.

It is easy to purchase carbon credits from various agencies that sell them in an open market from where they can be bought like any other financial instrument. Carbon credits can also be purchased by persons not representing any organization, if they wish to bring down their own carbon footprint. The amount contributed through your investment is routed to fund ecological projects running in different corners of the world that contribute towards neutralizing your emissions.

Carbon offsetting focuses on lowering the negative effects of greenhouse gas emissions by persons or corporations caused either ignorantly or in full knowledge. In this system, you take measures to mitigate whatever bad effects your emissions have had on the atmosphere by stopping environmental pollution in some other place in the world. Thus the total level of emissions throughout the globe will not go beyond danger levels, and the environment will be saved from the excesses of pollution.

Carbon offsetting is a system of balancing the unchecked release of greenhouse gases being made by individuals and companies throughout the world. In this system, when your actions emit the pollutants, you adopt measures to prevent emissions some where else on the planet to neutralize the effects of the pollution caused by you. Hence a proper balance can be maintained in levels of emission across the globe, which will help in preventing excessive damage to the environment.

One method to engage in carbon offsetting is to participate in community programmes to improve the environment, planting many trees in your locality, or doing any activity that will effectively lower emission of CO2 and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. However, this is not always practical, which is why the carbon offset system was proposed as a convenient method where you can pay an organization to make up for the damage done by you to the environment. That organization then donates the money in ecological projects running anywhere on the planet.

According to the Clean Development Mechanism for carbon offsetting which is part of the Kyoto Protocol, companies and governments of the economically developed nations pay the developing countries for making sure that total emissions do not continue increasing unabated.

The opponents of the system are of the opinion that the issue of harm to the environment done by individuals is not solved by carbon offset. In both carbon offsetting and carbon trading, you pay for the damage you caused instead of actually stopping it.

But people who believe in these systems argue that carbon trading with its monetary incentives can greatly inspire firms to carry out their business in a more ecological manner. Similarly, in case of individuals, a system like carbon offset permits them to promote their eco friendly image and spread awareness about this cause. People have been inspired to opt for carbon offset as several celebrities have endorsed and adopted it. The system has obtained huge success over the years, with many people practising it and admitting its potential to improve the environment.

Since time immemorial, humans have been making use of fossil fuels for consumption in all types of endeavours as the primary source of energy. However, release of greenhouse gases like methane and carbon dioxide is caused by fossil fuels, which is quite harmful for the environment. Rising levels of emissions have led to a very high level of concentration of these gases in the atmosphere, resulting in global warming, which is threatening life on earth.

With an aim of reducing the emissions and safeguarding the planet, the idea of carbon credits was introduced. The well known Kyoto protocol saw over 170 national representatives agreeing to fix standard caps on greenhouse gas emissions in their respective nations in a phased manner. The set limits are then used by the country’s government for allotting quotas to different industrial and commercial entities of how much emission they are allowed.

Through the carbon credits concept, the government grants incentives to manufacturing entities that keep emissions less than the quota, and penalizes those who are not able to do so. By definition, one carbon credit is equivalent to one ton of carbon dioxide emitted in the atmosphere. In this novel system, manufacturing units or companies that emit greenhouse gases within the prescribed quota can sell carbon credits of an amount corresponding to the difference, whereas those units that release more will have to buy a corresponding amount of carbon credits from the market.

International trading of carbon credits focuses on minimization of greenhouse emissions by its ‘reward and penalty’ mechanism, and promotes a cleaner environment. Companies are forced to pay for leaving behind their carbon footprints under the carbon credits policy, and this now has a significant effect on their financial results. Therefore firms are striving to keep their emissions within allowed limits and adopt eco-friendly business options.

Another emission controlling financial strategy is the carbon offset credit, which serves a very similar purpose. A carbon offset credit is equivalent to reduction of one metric ton of CO2 or equivalent greenhouse gas in the atmosphere. This CO2 decrease is achieved by using renewable and eco-friendly forms of energy like solar and wind energy.

Like carbon credits, a carbon offset is purchased to make up for the emissions that go beyond the prescribed limits for a company so that it is able to conform to the emission regulations. Companies, governments and even individual people can buy carbon offset to offset their excess carbon footprint. This helps in encouraging and funding reduction in emissions and advancing eco-friendly efforts of generation of energy.

Carbon trading was born out of the necessity to decrease greenhouse gas emissions, and has become increasingly popular throughout the world in recent years. Carbon trading is essentially a trade in carbon credits in which each credit permits the buyer to release one tonne of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the air, and it is the basic trading principle governing the cap-and-trade system as formulated in the Kyoto Protocol.

Global emission allotments have been restricted by the Kyoto protocol, and the caps are distributed as carbon credits to every operator, who gets a particular amount of these credits that can be consumed or transacted in the market. Companies that think they may cross the emission limits can purchase these credits from low-emission industries that have credits left with them because of opting for eco-friendly methods of doing business. As high-emission organizations are forced to compensate for their act, they are driven to opt for greener technologies.

So far carbon trading has been a success, with market reports indicating that several large industries across the world are advocating this emission-lowering solution. This is because carbon trading gives them flexibility in their short-term and medium-term strategies.

If the figures of the World Bank’s Carbon Finance Unit are to be believed, then carbon trading is increasing very rapidly with each passing year. There has been a great increase from 41% to 240% in the carbon trading market between the years 2003 and 2005. The carbon finance market, centred in London, has also seen immense growth, which clearly suggests that the exchange of carbon credits is proving to be a profitable business for many organizations. Despite being out of the Kyoto Protocol list of nations, many states and industries in the US have approved of the carbon credits scheme and have incorporated it in their business. The EU too, with its own carbon trading system, has been actively engaged in carbon trading for a few years now.

However, this system has not received a positive response from some parties. As one of the goals of carbon trading is to encourage the development of greener, low-emission technologies, the immense increase in carbon trading is a reason for worry as it indicates that companies are opting to spend more on the purchase of carbon credits rather than investing in more eco-friendly technologies. Hence, carbon trading has been a matter of debate in several parts of the world, and some specialists are of the belief that options like taxation on excessive carbon emissions is the better way to limit the greenhouse gas emissions.

As the planet struggles to deal with the serious threats posed by air-borne pollutants and greenhouse gases, carbon offset is providing an incentive to motivate governments and organizations to keep carbon emissions within prescribed limits.

As the world reels under increasing levels of air pollution and global warming, carbon offset is acting as a saviour by incentivizing firms and governments to decrease their carbon emissions.

The uncontrolled emission of harmful greenhouse gases is controlled by the carbon offset idea, which does so by providing incentive for making use of alternative and renewable energy, reforestation projects etc.. The greenhouse gas emission limits for developed and developing nations are governed by the Kyoto Protocol, an internationally accepted pact, which was ratified in 2005 by almost all nations of the world.

As per the Protocol, companies releasing thousands of kilos of carbon dioxide have to either cut back on their emissions to the permitted levels, purchase carbon credits certificates, which can be traded on the bourses, or otherwise pay a carbon tax for being in compliance with the prescribed reduction. One carbon credit, which is an older instrument than carbon offset, permits the credit’s buyer to discharge one tonne of carbon dioxide into the air, and this technique is the most cost effective method of purchasing an allowance to release excessive greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Both global and regional companies, to make their operations carbon neutral and improve their image in front of customers and investors, are increasingly purchasing carbon credits.

Ambitious ecological projects throughout the globe that are working towards the overall decrease of CO2′s harmful effects on the environment are now also being aided by the carbon offset system, which funds many of these projects. It helps in promoting alternative and renewable energy choices like wind energy, solar power etc and other nature conservation initiatives like reforestation.

Ordinary people are also doing their bit and are purchasing carbon offset to make the environment cleaner and to spread awareness about environment conservation. Buying carbon offset is simple and can be easily implemented on the internet through one of the various carbon offset provider websites; but it must be ensured that your investment is making real influence through proper projects.

However, we must not forget that buying carbon offset does not take away our responsibilities, and that all of us can play an important part in reducing our carbon footprints by bringing small modifications to our daily lives. We should stick to certain fundamental practices like switching off lights and other electronic equipments when not required, making use of low-energy bulbs and LED lighting, and going for cleaner fuels like biodiesel.

Carbon offset is still not a popular word for a layman. Imparting relevant knowledge of the concept will go a long way in creating a healthy and pollution-free environment.

As people are becoming aware of the devastating effects of global warming on the planet, methods like carbon offset and carbon credits are gaining wide acceptance throughout the world as effective tools for environment protection.

With growing knowledge of the dangers of global warming, strategies like carbon credits and carbon offset are becoming increasingly popular with individuals and businesses as a successful means to safeguard our planet.

If you want to make up for the adverse effects your activities have had on nature, you can purchase a specific amount of carbon offset in order to nullify the damage caused by you. Your purchase of a carbon offset helps fund environment friendly initiatives such as power generation units making use of wind farms and solar energy.

Before venturing into carbon offset, you must first look at your everyday activities that lead to emissions of greenhouse gases. Typical activities that account for a significant amount of carbon emissions for most individuals are use of cars, air travel, and household energy.

After you have identified all these actions that cause emissions, you should seriously attempt to reduce some of them and get rid of some altogether. Such a goal oriented initiative would reduce the unfavourable effects that you bring on the planet.
