In a world brimming with curiosity and a thirst for wisdom, the enigmatic realm of mystery schools stands as a beacon of ancient traditions that have captivated seekers for centuries. These elusive institutions shrouded in mystique and wisdom, have long piqued the interest of those yearning for esoteric knowledge and spiritual enlightenment.
It is often easy to fall into the trap of placing our values onto ancient cultures.
We may look at what archaeologists consider to be "religious sites" and wonder at their construction; the amount of effort and dedication it took to construct them. It is far too easy for us to image that because "we", in the now, can not conceive of how they were created, there must have been some external, possibly extra-terrestrial, assistance. It's sometimes difficult to recognise the way some of these ancient civilisations were able to mobilise their populations towards a single goal We often read of some "major discovery" which calls into question the traditional, "academic", view of ancient history which, after some consideration, turns out to be a misunderstanding or misrepresentation of established understandings.
Thus, for the most part, I find the idea of ancient aliens building the pyramids for example, far from convincing. The Egyptians were not the first of the worlds major civilisations and we need to understand their culture in the context of those which came before.
I can accept that the power of human ingenuity and focus effort can achieve great things. It is clear that religious and spiritual belief systems were behind such structures we find at Golbeki Tepi, Stonehenge and in Egypt. It's easy to forget that religious belief and social organisation could mobilise a large work force and engage them in a single, massive project.
The designs of temples, and subsequently Cathedrals and Churches, were influenced by beliefs, designed to reflect ideas of cosmic order and built by skilled artisans. The priests and leaders within will have promoted the idea that there were, and are, mysteries that only they fully understood. More importantly understandings revealed within their teachings were only for those initiated into these "inner secrets".
Origins of Mystery Schools
Mystery schools trace their lineage back to antiquity, where they flourished in civilisations such as ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. They served as cradles of spiritual wisdom, nurturing adept individuals in what we would now call metaphysics, philosophy, and mysticism. These teachings will have inspired the rites and rituals which were kept from public view.
We can consider these initiates from both a spiritual and political perspective.
Those who understood or "held" the secrets of the religion had, and of course still have, power. They influence royalty and pauper alike. I sometimes think that modern re-inventions of mystery schools want to paint a very romantic picture of their histories. We can get caught up in the idea of "enlightenment" and forget that there was a political side to all priesthoods.
Key Teachings and Practices
There is a tendency to think that the key teachings of mystery schools were about spiritual awakening and self-realisation. Maybe that was part of it. However, the priesthood, the holders of the mysteries, were the glue which held communities and empires together.
The modern seeker of spiritual enlightenment assumes that the Ancient Mystery schools were about esoteric practices, meditation, and profound philosophical discourse. They were about students being encouraged to transcend the limitations of the material world and connect with the divine essence within themselves.
The reality is, perhaps, a little less "fluffy".
We may like to think that ...
"The pursuit of inner alchemy, symbolised by the transformation of base elements into spiritual gold, was a recurrent theme in the teachings of these ancient schools."
But the core drive will have been political. The power to influence both royalty and pauper.
I do, however accept, it is possible doctrines of mystery schools revolved around universal truths, esoteric symbolism, and the exploration of the hidden dimensions of reality. And, by guiding students through a series of initiations and rites of passage, these schools aimed to unlock the latent potential within individuals and awaken them to the deeper mysteries of existence.
Such initiations were as much about creating a class of spiritual leaders who sang from the same hymn-sheet as it was about promoting deeper truths.
Relevance of Mystery Schools Today
While the ancient mystery schools may have faded into the mists of time, it may be that their wisdom and teachings continue to resonate with truth seekers in the modern era.
In a world marked by uncertainty and spiritual longing, the esoteric knowledge and transformative practices imparted by mystery schools offer a timeless path to self-discovery and inner growth.
Today, individuals drawn to the enigmatic allure of the so-called mystery teachings seek a deeper understanding of themselves and the universe around them. By embracing the principles of mindfulness, self-reflection, and spiritual insight championed by the ancients, modern seekers can embark on a profound journey of personal and metaphysical discovery.
The mystery teachings today seem to be about the individual - ie "self discovery", "self awareness" and so on. It all seems a bit self-indulgent,Whilst I have no real problem with that motivation, there is a tendency to gloss over what mystery teachings were about.
They were about seeking understanding through learning, questioning and challenging.
They were philosophical and practical and certainly not akin to what cynics call "navel gazing". One of the reasons for initiation into a mystery tradition, was ensure only that those devoted to the key practices of learning and practice, were able to continue their studies.
We all recall Pythagoras from our school days. Yes, he's the guy that said something about triangles.
Pythagoras was one leader of a Mystery School which bore his name. The Pythagoreans.
The Pythagorean school functioned as a religious community, bound by strict rules and by secrecy. Entry into the Pythagorean community was arduous, and may have involved undertaking a five-year vow of silence, where new initiates listened to the teachings, but were not permitted to speak.
Pythagoreans made a distinction between the akousmatikoi ("those who listen"), and the mathematikoi ("those who love science").
Pythagoras was the first philosopher to talk about philosophia or ’the love of wisdom.’ Two ideas in particular are associated with the Pythagorean pursuit of wisdom: the idea of the transmigration of souls (reincarnation); and the idea that numbers are somehow fundamental to reality.
Today there seems to be an odd separation between 'mysticism" and "science". This, I suggest, is because it is far easier for us to swept away on the wings of "fluffy idealism" that it is to devote time to learning and questioning.
In a world inundated with superficial distractions and fleeting pleasures, the idea of mystery schools and mystery teachings is alluring. They can be seen as a playful "spiritual" distraction or as a guiding light for those who yearn for a deeper connection to the mysteries of existence.
In the end it is about how much you are willing to question and explore rather than accept and follow.
